The National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) established the National Main Street Center in 1980 to provide support and to encourage the revitalization of Main Street. New Albany officially joined the Main Street program in October of 1996 and is based on the same tried and true approach that has revitalized communities across the U.S. The Main Street Four-Point Approach is a comprehensive revitalization working through four committees: Organization, Design, Economic Restructuring, and Promotion. The Four-Point Approach strategy and the Eight Guiding Principles are an effective tool for volunteer driven, community-based, grassroots revitalization efforts. The Main Street approach has been successful in communities of all sizes, both rural and urban.
