The featured speaker for the event was Gray Swoope, Executive Director of the Mississippi Development Authority.
Among the Award Recipients was New Albany Main Street Association for Best Special Event for Trick or Treat Downtown. This award recognizes the downtown organization that has created a quality special event, generating traffic for the downtown.
More than 3,000 trick or treaters and their parents came to Downtown New Albany for the Annual "Trick or Treat Downtown" in 2007. This year’s event had a unique twist; Merchants could participate by having a replica of their storefronts painted by city and county art classes and sponsor candy to be passed out at these storefront replicas. Ths display art created a "Trick or Treat Village" where trick or treating was joined by face painting, apple bobbing, a costume contest, pumpkin contest, and many other activities. The plan to expose many participants to Historic Downtown New Albany was a success!
"The 2008 Awards Luncheon gives us the opportunity to celebrate our annual award winners and pay tribute to our Main Street communities and volunteers who work diligently to revitalize their downtowns," said Bob Wilson, Mississippi Main Street Association Executive Director.
"We are proud that the Mississippi program consistly ranks in the top Main Street programs throughout the country. These awards are an opportunity to recognize those individuals, businesses, special projects, and agencies that make that hight rank a reality", Wilson said.
Mississippi Main Street Association currently has 56 active commnity programs throughout the state. The Main Street program is an Economic Development Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
