July's SHOP the BLOCK is going to benefit Helping Hands of Union County. Helping Hands of Union County serves the community with activities like The Bundle Up Project, Traveling Turkey Thanksgiving Meals, Christmas presents and more!

W. Bankhead Street will be closed to thru traffic on Thursday, July 28th, 4-8pm, from the Tanglefoot Plaza to Farm Bureau Insurance for safe pedestrian activity. Our goal is to have a celebratory downtown vibe. Several of our stores will be open for after hours shopping and everyone from the community is welcome.

We will have live music, food trucks, a kids activity area with fun activities and candy prizes.

Call Tracy at the Main Street office, 662-534-3438 for assistance.

Shop the Block started as a way to help downtown New Albany’s merchants sell extra inventory because of the cancellation of the annual Sanctuary Hospice Celebration Village due to the covid pandemic. With funding sources and events shutting down, many non-profits were financially hurt in 2020. The New Albany Main Street retail merchants agreed that a special shopping night each month would help fill the void of these groups not being able to fundraise all the while helping merchants with surplus inventory that needed to be sold. A percentage of all sales during the designated shopping hours were given to the chosen charity of that month. From the September 2021 kick-off of Shop the Block to August, over $5000 was given to local charities like New Good Samaritan, Helping Hands of Union County, and First Choice.

SHOP the BLOCK is an opportunity for community to shop local and support local. Participating Main Street partners welcome residents and guests in for after hours shopping. Stores remain open late, and from 5-7pm a percentage of all sales goes to a local charity organization. For every $10 spent with one of these locally owned businesses will donate $1-2 to the organization of the month. When we have just 100 people spending $20 during this after hours shopping opportunity we can help the selected organization by giving them a $100-200 donation.
