SHOP the BLOCK - New Albany, Mississippi

Shop the Block started as a way to help downtown New Albany’s merchants sell

extra inventory because of the cancellation of the annual Sanctuary Hospice

Celebration Village due to the covid pandemic. With funding sources and events

shutting down, many non-profits were financially hurt in 2020. The New Albany

Main Street retail merchants agreed that a special shopping night each month would

help fill the void of these groups not being able to fundraise all the while helping

merchants with surplus inventory that needed to be sold. A percentage of all sales

during the designated shopping hours were given to the chosen charity of that month.Since the September 2021 kick-off of Shop the Block, over $5000 has been given to local charities like New Good Samaritan, Helping Hands of Union County,

and First Choice.

SHOP the BLOCK is an opportunity for community to shop local and support local.

Participating Main Street partners welcome residents and guests in for after hours

shopping. Stores remain open late, and from 5-7pm a percentage of all sales goes to

a local charity organization. For every $10 spent with one of these locally owned

businesses will donate $1-2 to the organization of the month. If we can get just 100

people spending $20 during this after hours shopping opportunity we can help the

selected organization by giving them a $100-200 donation.
